In a hands-on effort to combat weekend food insecurity, Kearny Bank team members recently volunteered to assemble hundreds of “Backpack Meals” for the Foodbank Network of Somerset County. The initiative comes as the program prepares to serve nearly 2,000 students across 27 schools during the current academic year.
In addition to the volunteer hours, the KearnyBank Foundation reinforced the effort with a $5,000 donation to help sustain the network’s growing reach.
For many students in Somerset County, school-provided breakfast and lunch are their primary sources of nutrition. When schools close for the weekend, these children often face a “food gap.” The Backpack Program addresses this by providing “child-friendly, ready-to-eat” meal bags that students can take home on Fridays.
