Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) officially tapped 30-year industry veteran Bruce Wheeler to serve as general manager of the historic Loew’s Jersey Theatre. The appointment marks a critical milestone for the landmark venue as it undergoes a massive $130 million restoration ahead of its highly anticipated grand reopening in Fall 2026.
Wheeler, a New Jersey native, will oversee day-to-day operations, venue readiness, and event management for the 1929 “Wonder Theatre.” His primary mission is to transform the once-faded movie palace into a world-class, modernized entertainment hub capable of hosting major concerts, comedy, and community events while meticulously preserving its Baroque-Rococo architectural soul.
The restoration of Loew’s Jersey is a collaborative public-private partnership between the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA), the State of New Jersey, and HBSE. Once completed, the theater will fill a vital gap in the region’s venue sizes, joining a portfolio that includes Newark’s Prudential Center and Jersey City’s White Eagle Hall.
“Bruce’s experience and vision will help us unlock its full potential,” Sean Saadeh, chief programming officer at HBSE said. “Loew’s is a truly special venue, and we are preparing to deliver world-class live entertainment to Jersey City and beyond.”
Wheeler arrives at Loew’s with a formidable resume that spans record labels, international touring, and iconic venue management.
-
Venue leadership: Served as General Manager for New York’s Capitol Theatre, The Beacon Theatre, and Central Park SummerStage.
-
Tour management: Through his company, Babylon Productions, he managed global touring for A-list talent including Jimmy Fallon, Cage the Elephant, and Regina Spektor.
-
Versatile background: Beyond his NYU entertainment marketing studies, Wheeler is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, bringing a unique perspective to the venue’s hospitality and guest experience.
The restoration project is one of the most complex historic preservation efforts in New Jersey’s history. Key upgrades being overseen by the team include:
-
Structural revival: Replacement of the massive roofs and restoration of the ornate terracotta facade.
-
Artistic preservation: Artisans from EverGreene Architectural Arts are currently restoring decorative plaster, scagliola columns, and the legendary Saint George and the Dragon clock.
-
Modern amenities: Integration of state-of-the-art HVAC, audio-visual systems, and a flexible seating configuration that will allow for both traditional theater and general admission standing events.
“Bringing this theatre back to life is about more than just one building; it’s the resurgence of an entire neighborhood,” former Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop during a recent project update. Under Wheeler’s leadership, the Loew’s Jersey is poised to become the “crown jewel” of the Journal Square cultural revival.
