William Paterson University earns elite ‘Gold Level’ Military Friendly status for 16th straight year

William Paterson University (WPU) has once again solidified its reputation as a premier destination for New Jersey’s service members. For the 16th consecutive year, the Wayne-based institution has been named a Military Friendly® School, this time rising to the prestigious Gold Level status for the 2026-27 cycle.

The designation, awarded by VIQTORY, recognizes higher education institutions that implement best-in-class policies and social supports for veterans. WPU earned its Gold Level ranking within the “Small Public Category” and was simultaneously honored as a Military Spouse Friendly® School.

The university’s commitment to those who served is a point of pride for both the campus and the state. In 2022, WPU received the “We Value Our Veterans” Community Award from the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, presented by the state’s Adjutant General.

“We are honored to once again be designated as a military-friendly institution,” Miki Cammarata, Vice President for Student Development said. “Our students who are veterans, active military, and dependents bring a unique and important perspective to our campus.”

WPU’s Office of Veteran and Military Affairs acts as a dedicated hub for students transitioning from the front lines to the lecture hall. Key resources that contributed to the Gold Level status include:

  • The Global War on Terrorism Tuition Waiver: A unique program that allows veterans who have exhausted their federal educational benefits to continue their studies tuition-free.
  • Personalized Academic Assistance: Tailored orientations and career services specifically for student veterans.
  • Veteran-Specific Programming: Annual traditions including a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, a Veterans Graduation Recognition, and a Veterans Day Flag Planting.

For students like Israel Vargas-Reyes, a U.S. Army veteran and former Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter president, the university’s support system was the deciding factor in staying at WPU to pursue an MBA.

“The University not only supports our transition but also empowers us to lead, grow, and make a meaningful impact,” Vargas-Reyes said, who will earn his bachelor’s degree this spring. “Knowing I have a strong support system and an ever-growing community of like-minded individuals is a powerful asset.”

Silvia Barrera, Coordinator of Veteran and Military Affairs, noted that the Gold status reflects a “deep investment” in students both during their time on campus and beyond.
