Sherrill celebrates 100 days with launch of ‘whole-of-government’ permitting dashboard pilot

Marking her 100th day in office, Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Thursday took a decisive step toward fulfilling a core campaign promise: cutting New Jersey’s notorious “red tape.”Sherrill announced a call for submissions for a new Permitting Dashboard pilot, a first-of-its-kind digital tool designed to bring transparency and speed to the state’s complex approval processes.

The pilot program will select up to 10 projects across the energy, commercial, and multi-family housing sectors. These projects will serve as the “test case” for a unified system that allows applicants to track permits simultaneously across the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Department of Community Affairs (DCA).

On her first day in office, the governor signed Executive Order 5, mandating a more responsive state government. The launch of the dashboard pilot is the culmination of that 100-day “sprint.”

“On Day One, I committed to cutting permitting times and delivering real accountability to make it easier and faster to build in New Jersey,” Sherrill said. “This is a critical step toward a more streamlined system, saving New Jerseyans time and money and making it easier to build more housing, open businesses, and deliver critical infrastructure.”

The administration argues that the current fragmented system often stalls projects for months or years, driving up costs for developers—costs that are ultimately passed down to New Jersey families in the form of higher rents and energy bills.

Powered by the New Jersey Innovation Authority (NJIA), the full version of the dashboard will eventually be open to the public. It will feature:

  • Real-Time Status Updates: See exactly which agency is currently reviewing a file.
  • Target Due Dates: Clear deadlines to ensure agency accountability.
  • Cross-Agency Coordination: A “single pane of glass” view for projects requiring approvals from multiple departments (e.g., environmental and transportation).

DEP Commissioner Potosnak noted that the agency has already launched “Operation FAST” specifically for energy projects, which will eventually be integrated into the broader dashboard to accelerate clean energy infrastructure.

The dashboard announcement follows several other permitting milestones achieved during the Sherrill Administration’s first 100 days:

  1. Permitting Governing Council: Established a high-level team to drive cross-agency strategy.
  2. Permit Catalogs: Completed a comprehensive audit of all existing state permits to identify “pain points.”
  3. Staffing Expansion: Proposed a budget increase to hire more permit processors, addressing the chronic understaffing that leads to backlogs.
  4. Stakeholder Engagement: Met with over 350 business leaders across all 21 counties to gather direct feedback.

The move was met with swift approval from New Jersey’s business community. Michael Egenton of the NJ Chamber of Commerce called the reforms “essential to keeping New Jersey competitive,” while John Lucas of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce emphasized that transparency is a “solutions-driven tool” for small business owners who often struggle to navigate state bureaucracy.

Legislative leaders also signaled their support. Speaker Craig J. Coughlin and Senator Paul Sarlo both praised the initiative as a way to increase predictability in the construction and energy sectors, which are vital to the state’s economic health.

How to Apply: Developers and business owners interested in the pilot can find application details at Permits.NJ.Gov. The application window for the initial 10 spots is open until May 21.
