High-speed digital infrastructure is officially heading underground in Middlesex County. GoNetspeed, the Northeast’s largest independent fiber internet provider, announced that construction is officially underway on a brand-new, 100% fiber-optic network in South River—marking the company’s first-ever footprint in the state of New Jersey.
Backed by a $13.6 million private investment, the infrastructure project will deploy multi-gigabit broadband capabilities directly to more than 10,500 residential homes and local businesses throughout the borough. Crews have already begun laying the groundwork, and company officials expect the first wave of customers to be active and connected by the fall.
The deployment is designed to counter the limitations of traditional copper and coaxial cable lines, which often suffer from severe lag, buffering, and asymmetric data transfer rates.
Once fully integrated, the future-proof network will deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds, ranging from 500 Mbps up to 6 Gbps. The symmetrical architecture is particularly critical for data-heavy modern tasks, such as seamless video conferencing, competitive online gaming, and real-time cloud server synchronization.
“Too many communities are still being forced to settle for internet that can’t keep up with their needs,” Richard Clark, GoNetspeed president and CEO said. “In South River, we’re changing that by bringing a 100% fiber network built for the speed, reliability, and performance people depend on every day. As we enter New Jersey for the first time, this investment reflects our long-term commitment to building infrastructure that supports how people live, work, and grow.”
While South River represents the initial construction kickoff, it is merely the opening phase of a much larger, multi-market offensive. The provider initially named New Jersey as the 11th state in its rapidly growing eastern footprint after revealing a massive $110 million macro-investment targeting six initial Garden State communities.
The initial rollout schedule includes:
- South River: First community currently under construction ($13.6M allocation).
- Old Bridge & Parlin: Nearby Central Jersey hubs slated for subsequent integration.
- Carteret: Gateway submarket in northern Middlesex County.
- Northfield & Ventnor: Coastal Atlantic County municipalities positioned for southern expansion.
The transition to a dedicated fiber operating system is also being framed as a crucial economic asset for local commercial sectors and real estate values.
GoNetspeed’s expansion across its 11-state coverage area has been heavily accelerated by a core partnership formed with private equity firm Oak Hill Capital. Unlike legacy providers tied down by traditional utility models, the independent operator relies on rapid, privately funded rollouts to establish immediate, high-yield digital access in mid-market suburban zones.
