Johnson & Johnson bolsters oncology pipeline with $1B cash acquisition of Firefly Bio

New Brunswick-based health care giant Johnson & Johnson on Monday announced a definitive agreement to acquire Firefly Bio, Inc. for $1 billion in cash. The acquisition aims to accelerate J&J’s oncology innovation and significantly expand its capabilities in treating hard-to-treat, solid tumor cancers.

At the center of the acquisition is Firefly Bio’s proprietary Firelink™ degrader antibody conjugate (DAC) platform. This next-generation platform targets pan-KRAS and other genetic drivers of cancer. The KRAS gene mutation has long been considered a notoriously “undruggable” target in oncology, leaving patients with limited treatment options and short survival timelines.

The Firelink™ DAC platform represents a major technological leap beyond traditional monoclonal antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates. By delivering a highly selective protein degrader directly to tumor cells, the platform is designed to destroy cancer drivers while actively avoiding healthy cells—thereby overcoming key efficacy and toxicity limitations of existing therapeutic approaches.

“We believe the proprietary Firelink™ platform will overcome the limitations of current treatments and diversify our pipeline with preclinical candidates for treating multiple types of solid tumors,” Dr. John Reed, executive vice president of Innovative Medicine Research & Development at Johnson & Johnson, said.

The addition of Firefly Bio aligns with Johnson & Johnson’s three-decade legacy in oncology innovation. The biotechnology company’s emerging modalities are expected to integrate smoothly with J&J’s existing expertise in antibody engineering, paving the way for more effective, durable cancer therapies.

Under the terms of the definitive agreement, the $1 billion all-cash transaction is expected to close later this year. The deal remains subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Johnson & Johnson noted that the specific accounting treatment for the transaction will be communicated on or before the official closing date.
