As artificial intelligence races forward, its evolution will no longer be driven by isolated breakthroughs, but by a massive, interconnected domino effect spanning energy grids, labor markets, and healthcare. That is the central finding of the Technology Megatrends 2030 Report, released globally Wednesday by IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization headquartered in Piscataway.
Synthesizing insights from 168 technical and scientific experts across 38 countries and six continents, the report evaluates 30 breakthrough technologies across artificial intelligence, energy, health and biotech, space tech, and physical AI (robotics).
For decades, technology forecasting has largely centered on standalone machine capabilities. However, the new IEEE report stresses that AI scalability, compute infrastructure, and global energy grids are now inextricably linked as a first-order problem that can no longer be examined in a vacuum.
“For decades, technology forecasting has been about what machines will be able to do,” Mary Ellen Randall, 2026 IEEE president, CEO, and IEEE fellow said. “This report shifts the conversation to something far more important: how these advances will intersect with one another to shape human lives. The data makes clear that trust, safety, and human connection must guide every major breakthrough in the decade ahead.”

The Death of Typing: Human-AI interaction boasts the shortest horizon to broad commercial adoption in the study. Within a brief two- to three-year window, experts anticipate a major interface shift away from text-based typing toward real-time, cognitive audio and video interactions.
- Workforce Evolution and AI Literacy: Described by the panel through the lens of “people without jobs and jobs without people,” automation is reshaping white-collar roles while spawning new sectors. AI literacy is quickly becoming a fundamental skill required across office, trade, and technical roles alike, requiring robust guardrails in trust, security, and governance.
- Personalized Medicine Takes Center Stage: Rated as the single highest-impact technological advancement in the entire study (scoring 4.93 out of 5.00), personalized medicine is projected to transition advanced diagnostics, individual genetic therapies, and tailored treatments out of the lab and into mainstream medical care within the next four years.
- The Energy Dilemma: While energy generation capacity is expected to double in developed nations over the next two to three years, data centers and AI infrastructure—which already consume roughly 10% of global electricity—will continue to strain power grids. The report warns that efficiency gains in AI chips will likely be offset by organizations deploying heavier workloads rather than reducing net energy consumption.
“AI is no longer operating in a vacuum—it is now deeply connected to our energy, infrastructure, and physical systems,” Dejan Milojicic, chair of the IEEE Future Directions Committee Industry Advisory Board and IEEE fellow said. “Because these trends are so intertwined, we need a big-picture approach to building tech, alongside a workforce that is ready to continuously learn and adapt.”
Beyond core technologies, the report addresses a high-stakes tug-of-war between fast-moving technological drivers and global suppressors, such as geopolitical friction and talent shortages. IEEE leadership emphasizes that societal scale will ultimately favor technologies anchored in transparency, security, and human well-being over sheer speed.
“Whether retraining the global workforce or integrating AI responsibly into daily life, the success of these megatrends depends on ensuring innovation strengthens human well‑being and public trust,” Sophia Muirhead, IEEE Executive Director and COO, said.
