Moshe Kam, who has served as the dean of NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering since 2014, was named as the university’s interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, the school announced Tuesday.
Kam succeeds John Pelesko, who is now serving as interim president, following the retirement of Teik Lim earlier this summer.
Kam brings a solid resume of activity at NJIT.
During his tenure as dean of the Newark College of Engineering, he led the establishment of the School of Applied Engineering and Technology, the creation of the Materials Engineering, General Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Technology degree programs, the launch and expansion of NJIT’s Makerspace, and the opening of the Advanced Air Mobility Lab and the Life Sciences Motion Capture Lab.
He also oversaw the hiring of nearly 70 new faculty members in the college and drove increases in the volume, reach and external funding of its scholarly research.
Before joining NJIT, Kam was head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University. He has served on the boards of directors of the United Engineering Foundation, ABET and IEEE, and was elected president and CEO of IEEE in 2011.
Pelesko applauded the announcement.
“Moshe has compiled a record of distinction as both a scholar and academic leader,” he said. “He is passionate about student and faculty success and has been an innovator throughout his career. I am deeply appreciative of his willingness to step into this important role.”
Kam earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Tel Aviv University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Drexel University. His research focuses on detection and estimation, navigation, image processing and data fusion, and he has advised 38 graduate students who earned doctoral degrees.
He said he is eager to take on the new role.
