YWCA Northern New Jersey has named West Orange executive and small business owner Janet Hill Smith as President of its Board of Directors, selecting a leader whose corporate experience, entrepreneurial background and long personal history with the organization align with its expanding mission across the region.
Smith, Vice President at Kairos Logistics LLC and owner of The UPS Store in Roseland, steps into the role as the YWCA continues to grow programs focused on racial justice, women’s empowerment, family support and economic opportunity.
Helen Archontou, CEO of YWCA Northern New Jersey, applauded the announcement.
“Janet is an exceptional leader whose experience in both the corporate and small business sectors makes her uniquely positioned to help guide our organization into its next chapter,” she said. “She understands that strong organizations are built through meaningful relationships and shared purpose. Just as importantly, her personal connection to the YWCA gives her a deep appreciation for our mission and the lives it changes.”
Smith’s appointment marks a return to the organization that shaped her early years. Growing up in Pittsburgh, she participated in YWCA after-school and summer programs and later volunteered as a student counselor. Decades later, encouraged by longtime community leader Dr. Christine Thorpe, she joined the YWCA Northern New Jersey Board — now becoming its top volunteer officer.
Her professional path spans operations leadership, strategic planning and business development. As a small business owner, she has become a vocal advocate for expanding economic opportunities for women — a priority that mirrors the YWCA’s WE360 Business Essentials Program, which provides training, mentorship and resources for women entrepreneurs.
“As both a business executive and entrepreneur, I’ve seen firsthand how access to mentorship, education and opportunity can change the trajectory of a person’s life,” Smith said. “I’m honored to help lead an organization that is creating those opportunities every day, whether through programs that support women entrepreneurs, strengthen families, or advance racial justice. I look forward to building relationships that will help sustain and grow YWCA Northern New Jersey’s mission throughout our region.”
