Prudential study finds shifting household dynamics demand personalized workplace benefits

Let’s face it: life is complicated, and our workplace benefits should probably keep up.

A fresh study from Prudential Financial breaks down how employees really feel about their benefits, and it turns out there’s a pretty big disconnect between what companies think they’re offering and what workers actually need.

In the third installment of Prudential’s 2026 Benefits & Beyond series—aptly titled “The Future of Work: How benefits define culture and drive workforce loyalty”—the numbers tell a pretty clear story. While 89% of bosses think their benefits package screams “we care about you,” only 66% of employees actually feel that way.

So, where is the disconnect? It’s not usually a lack of coverage options. Instead, employees are struggling with cost, confusing paperwork, and benefits that just don’t match where they are in life. In fact, 20% of workers say they feel totally overwhelmed during enrollment, and less than 40% actually feel confident about the choices they’re making.

Michael Estep, president of Prudential Group Insurance, put it best: “Life is full of milestones, transitions, and unexpected moments, and benefits should be designed with that reality in mind.”

When benefits actually match real-life challenges—like juggling kids or teenagers at home (who, by the way, are some of the most engaged employees out there)—the vibe changes completely. People feel more loyal to their company, more confident in their choices, and way less stressed out.

As Bianka Douglas, vice president and People Business Leader at Prudential, pointed out: “Employees don’t necessarily want more benefits. They want help finding the benefits that matter most to them.”

Ultimately, workers aren’t asking for a one-size-fits-all mountain of paperwork. They just want simple, personalized choices and smart tools that help them figure out what actually works for their unique household.
