The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey launched $45 million of incentive programs to encourage operators to purchase electric trucks and charging infrastructure.
CALSTART, a nonprofit focused on reducing emissions from the transportation industry, will serve as program designer and administrator for the Clean Truck Incentive (CTI) and Green Drayage Accelerator (GDA) programs.
The programs are aimed at helping the agency reach its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, including helping its partners, tenants and contractors reach the same goal.
“This $45 million partnership with CALSTART puts zero-emission trucks, terminal tractors, and charging infrastructure within reach for the operators who serve this port every day,” Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said in a press release. “Cleaner trucks here mean cleaner air not just for our port facilities, but for every community along the routes these trucks travel.”
CALSTART will build and launch tracking dashboards for the programs to monitor deployment, vehicle performance and charger utilization. These tools will be fully transferred to the Port Authority in 2028.
The programs are funded through a $451 million grant to the Port Authority through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports Program. That grant also will fund electric cargo-handling equipment at marine terminals, as well as the installation of infrastructure to allow container ships to plug in while at berth and shut down their auxiliary engines.
