Andrew Crummy opened a law firm in Newark in 1926, one that grew into a prominent regional firm known for its work in litigation, corporate, regulatory and other areas.
In 1950, John J. Gibbons joined the firm. He later became a partner and lent his name to the firm, helping make it a giant in New Jersey.
Today, the firm is part of FBT Gibbons, a national practice with nearly 800 lawyers in 26 offices.
On Sept. 29, the firm celebrated its 100th anniversary in Newark, gathering at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
The evening included a centennial presentation recognizing the people, partnerships and achievements that defined the firm’s first century. But it also looked forward.
Peter Torcicollo, co-managing partner of FBT Gibbons, said the event captured the past, present and future of the firm.
“Celebrating 100 years of Gibbons is about honoring the people and relationships that built this firm, but it is also about what that legacy makes possible today,” he said. “The deep roots, commitment to clients and communities, and spirit of collaboration developed over generations are now connected to colleagues and capabilities across FBT Gibbons.”
FBT Gibbons focuses on companies operating and investing in the middle market. Its clients range from large multinationals to mid-sized businesses and growth-oriented startups. Its work centers on corporate, litigation and regulatory matters in energy, finance, life sciences and manufacturing.
Torcicollo says the relationships, institutional knowledge and community connections Gibbons built over its first century now extend across the combined firm. That gives colleagues more room to collaborate and gives clients access to broader resources, without losing the relationships they’ve long valued.
“We are incredibly proud of where we came from and excited about what we continue building together,” he said.
