In Middlesex County, the future is coming into focus

Beam signing ceremony caps tour of four transformative facilities that anchor county’s Community, Innovation and Opportunity strategic investment plan

At the end of a tour of transformative new facilities – a magnet school, an athletic complex, a multi-purpose venue for gatherings and a student center for college kids – Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald Rios put the county’s Community, Innovation and Opportunity Strategic Investment Plan in perspective.

“This is more than steel and concrete — it’s about building a future where education, innovation, and community come together in one place,” he said.

The tour on Wednesday, which culminated in a ceremonial beam signing, included a number of local, state and union officials, including Congressman Frank Pallone (D, 6th District) and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (D, Woodbridge).

Officials viewed four CIO projects currently under construction: the Destination Athletic Complex at Thomas A. Edison Park, the Middlesex County Innovation Magnet School, the Multipurpose Community Venue and the Middlesex College Student Center.

At each stop, county and project leads shared updates on construction progress, project scope, and the impact these investments will have on residents, businesses, and future generations.

Together, these projects represent a bold investment in the County’s future — positioning Middlesex College and the surrounding area as a regional hub for education, economic opportunity and community life.

Middlesex County Commissioner Chanelle Scott McCullum, chair of the Economic Development Committee, said togetherness was a theme.

“These transformational projects are the result of collaboration between County government, Middlesex College, Middlesex County Magnet Schools, the Building and Construction Trades Council, Rutgers University, our partners at the state and federal levels and many more,” she said. “Together, we’re delivering on a bold promise to build a stronger, smarter, and more inclusive future for everyone who calls Middlesex County home.”

The CIO Strategic Investment Plan, first announced in November of 2022, is a visionary initiative that is transforming Middlesex College into a dynamic hub for education, workforce development, recreation, arts, and community engagement — all while fueling economic growth, improving quality of life, and expanding opportunities for residents and businesses.

CIO Strategic Investment Plan highlights underway include:

  • Multipurpose Community Venue (broke ground January 2025)
  • Middlesex College Student Center (broke ground January 2025)
  • Middlesex County Innovation Magnet School (broke ground March 2025)
  • Destination Athletic Complex at Thomas A. Edison Park featuring: 14 multi-sport synthetic fields, 16 tennis courts and a state-of-the-art recreational cricket field.

Future phases of the CIO Strategic Investment Plan will include:

  • Workforce Development and Conference Center
  • Community Park featuring an educational children’s amenity
  • Enhancements to existing outdoor spaces, incorporating public art, seating, and water features

Coughlin said he was thrilled to see the progress.

“Standing here, watching this all take shape, you cannot help but feel excited about what it will mean for the community,” he said. “From the state-of-the-art new high school to the vibrant new venues for athletics, culture and student life, we’re preparing young people for the jobs and opportunities that will shape the future and creating a space where families, neighbors, and students can come together and build lasting connections for generations to come.”

Rios wrapped up the day this way.

“With over 100,000 hours of 100% union labor already invested, we’re not just building infrastructure — we’re creating opportunity, access, and pride for every resident of Middlesex County,” he said.
