From a small Pennsylvania utility founded in 1886 to the nation’s largest regulated water and wastewater provider, American Water is officially marking its 140th anniversary this year.
To commemorate nearly a century and a half of operations, company leadership rang the Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange, signaling a year of celebration and a massive financial commitment to the future of American water infrastructure.
Today, American Water serves more than 14 million people across 14 regulated states and 18 military installations. Its footprint has expanded significantly in recent years, welcoming approximately 385,000 new customers through strategic acquisitions over the last decade alone.
While the anniversary honors the past, the company’s focus remains squarely on the future. John Griffith, president and CEO of American Water, announced an ambitious investment strategy to ensure system resilience and affordability.
“As we commemorate 140 years, American Water remains committed to investing in the systems and communities who rely on us every day,” said Griffith. “Over the next decade, we plan to invest up to $48 billion in infrastructure upgrades, resiliency, and regulated acquisitions.”
The 140-year anniversary isn’t the only milestone the Camden-based utility is celebrating this year. The company is also recognizing:
- 15 Years of Giving: The American Water Charitable Foundation has now provided more than $25 million in grants and matching gifts to local communities.
- 45 Years of Innovation: The company’s Research & Development Program continues to lead the industry in advancing the science of water safety and system reliability.
