Topping off ceremonies can be more than just a signal that a new building has hit a construction milestone. Such was the case Friday in Egg Harbor Township.
Numerous local economic development leaders said work on the 40,000-square-foot facility, the second building for the National Aerospace Research & Technology Park, shows the potential of the region.
“This moment represents more than steel and structure – it represents progress, partnership and the vision of creating a world class ecosystem for aerospace innovation right here in South Jersey,” Research Park CEO Howard Kyle said.
“Building #2 will provide critical space for startups, research institutions, and global leaders in aerospace to collaborate, innovate and grow.”
The N.J. Economic Development Authority certainly feels that way.
The EDA is making an $8.6 million investment through its Strategic Innovation Center initiative to create the Aerospace Innovation Center.
Chief Economic Transformation Officer Kathleen Coviello said the AIC will focus on research and development, innovation, and commercialization of emerging aerospace and aviation technologies, creating hundreds of good-paying, local jobs. The Atlantic County Improvement Authority and the Atlantic County Economic Alliance also are key partners in the project, which is located on a 58-acre parcel adjoining the FAA Technical Center.
State Sen. Vince Polistina said the center will help diversify the economy beyond the casinos.
County Executive Dennis Levinson said it will give the next generation of workers in the area a reason to stay in the area.
So, yes, the day was about a significant beam – but it was more about building a future.
