Belmar’s Playa Bowls targets ‘New Year, New You’ market with first-ever high-protein menu

As millions of Americans kick off their 2026 New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier, Belmar-based Playa Bowls is making a strategic play to capture the fitness-conscious consumer. The nation’s leading superfruit bowl shop announced this week the launch of its “Protein Wave” menu, the brand’s first dedicated lineup specifically engineered for high-protein functional fuel.

The move marks a significant business evolution for the New Jersey-born franchise. By pivoting toward “functional” nutrition—food that provides health benefits beyond basic nutrition—Playa Bowls is positioning itself to compete not just with snack shops, but with meal-replacement and post-workout giants.

In a market where consumers are increasingly scrutinizing labels, Playa Bowls is doubling down on “clean” ingredients. The new menu features five products—three smoothies and two bowls—each delivering a substantial 31 to 42 grams of protein.

For the business, this addresses a common critique of acai bowls: that they can be high in sugar and low in satiety. By integrating both whey and plant-based protein options, the company is expanding its demographic to include serious athletes and “weekend warriors” who traditionally prioritize macros over flavor.

“Protein Wave is made to support the way people actually live,” Abby Taylor, co-founder and chief marketing officer said. “It’s protein that feels fresh, balanced, and satisfying, and most importantly, protein that truly tastes amazing.”

The Jan. 5th launch is no coincidence. The first quarter is historically the “Super Bowl” for the wellness industry. To drive customer acquisition and retention, Playa Bowls is leveraging its Playa Rewards® digital ecosystem with a series of aggressive January promotions:

  • Launch-Week Offers: Discounts for members to sample the new high-protein builds.

  • Incentivized Discovery: Rotating promotions on smoothies and bowls throughout the month.

  • “Surprise and Delight”: Complimentary “Protein Bites” included with select purchases to encourage cross-category spending.

What started ten years ago as a single blender and a small cart on the Belmar boardwalk has transformed into a national franchise with hundreds of locations. The “Protein Wave” launch signals that the company is not resting on its laurels as a “treat” destination.

Instead, by incorporating ingredients like blue spirulina, kale, and blueberry flax granola, Playa Bowls is leaning into the $5 trillion global wellness economy. The customizable nature of the menu also allows the brand to stay relevant to various trending diets, including Keto, Paleo, and Whole30.
