About that ‘Turf War’ controversy. The one about how FIFA was going to sell the grass used for the World Cup final, pocketing tens of millions of dollars in doing so — thumbing their noses at New Jersey (and its taxpayers) in the process.
Well … that’s may not be entirely true.
So said the NYNJ Host Committee — in response to a release by Assemblyman Michael Inganamort (R, Sparta), who said New Jersey is being played.
The Host Committee told BINJE on Monday that it is party to the agreement to sell a small portion of the pitch after the World Cup. That only a small portion of the pitch (about 5 yards they said) is being sold — and that any proceeds will, indeed, benefit state taxpayers as it will be used to support fundraising efforts the committee has being doing for the good of the tournament and the state.
Officials at the Host Committee, said FIFA has a smaller revenue share than the Host Committee, one it earns for the use of their licensing.
The attempt to sell the field is just the latest way the committee is helping the state financially. Others include:
- Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s free ticket program, supporting youth soccer players from underserved communities, families of New Jersey National Guard service members currently deployed overseas, pediatricians’ patients through the Make-A-Wish program, and Bergen County first responders supporting World Cup operations
- A $3.6 million contribution to NJ TRANSIT for cross-honoring and discounts for regular commuters
- An administrative initiative supporting 34 community and neighborhood-based watch parties across New Jersey
- The Welcome World Rewards Program, which supports small businesses across New Jersey and offers prizes, including match tickets, to customers who earn points by patronizing these businesses.
