Following an extensive national search, William Paterson University has appointed Mel Johnson-Norwood as its new Vice President for Student Development.

Johnson-Norwood brings more than two decades of experience in student development, academic support, and inclusive leadership spanning diverse roles and higher education institutions. He succeeds Miki Cammarata, who is retiring after 12 years of service in the position.

University leadership expressed strong confidence in Johnson-Norwood’s ability to advance the institution’s student-centered mission.

“Dr. Johnson-Norwood’s career has been marked by dedication to students and significant achievement on behalf of their success,” William Paterson University President Richard Helldobler said. “I am confident that he will bring that same energy and impact to the William Paterson community.”

Johnson-Norwood joins William Paterson University from Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, where he served as vice chancellor for Student Affairs and associate provost. In that role, he managed a comprehensive portfolio of student services, oversaw the renovation of residence halls, and secured more than $2 million in federal and state awards dedicated to student success and wellness.

  • Dean of Students (Reinhardt University): Successfully drove initiatives that increased student retention rates.
  • Director of Retention and Transition Services (Miami Dade College): Redesigned academic intervention programs to significantly increase the number of students in good standing.

A native of New Orleans and a first-generation high school graduate, Johnson-Norwood is a prominent voice in national student affairs. He is the president-elect of the National Association for Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns (NAMRC) and a long-time member of NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education), where he has held multiple regional board and committee positions since 2014.

In 2022, he was honored with the NASPA African American Knowledge Community’s Sankofa Award, which recognizes senior student affairs officers for outstanding advocacy, support for marginalized students, and leadership mentorship.

Johnson-Norwood holds an extensive portfolio of academic credentials and clinical certifications:
