Deborah Heart and Lung Center has achieved a major milestone in advanced cardiac care, becoming the first hospital in Southern New Jersey to perform a commercial implant of the WiSE® System, a revolutionary leadless left ventricular pacing technology.
The breakthrough procedure expands treatment options for complex heart failure patients who have exhausted conventional therapies and previously lacked viable options for traditional cardiac resynchronization devices with leads.
Developed by EBR, the WiSE System is the world’s first and only wireless device capable of delivering left ventricular endocardial pacing (LVEP). By stimulating the endocardial tissue inside the left ventricle using a microscopic device roughly the size of a grain of rice, the system replicates the heart’s natural electrical activation pattern.
Dr. Raffaele Corbisiero, Deborah’s Division Director of Electrophysiology and Pacing, who led the clinical team in performing the procedure, said, “This device represents a significant breakthrough in pacing technology. The ability to deliver pacing therapy using a device the size of a grain of rice is revolutionary. It’s very exciting to think of the possibilities for cardiac care.”
Heart failure impacts more than 6 million people nationwide, causing debilitating symptoms like chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, and fluid retention that severely restrict daily life. While incurable, advanced cardiac devices help patients manage their condition, improve heart efficiency, and restore quality of life.
The milestone adds to a long history of cardiovascular innovation at the Browns Mills teaching hospital. Founded in 1922, Deborah Heart and Lung Center has treated more than 2.3 million patients.
