Hackensack University Medical Center has been named New Jersey’s top hospital
for a fourth straight year — and the ninth time in the past 13 rankings.
HUMC finished just outside the Top 20 rankings in the country, but it was ranked No. 6
in the New York metropolitan area.
Atlantic Health Morristown, the only hospital to break HUMC’s grip on No. 1 in recent
years, came in at No. 2. Atlantic Health Overlook came in at No. 3.
From there it got interesting.
Cooper University Medical Center came in at No. 4 and Englewood Hospital was
ranked No. 5 — the first ranking in the top five for either facility.
Two RWJBarnabas Health hospitals tied for No. 6: Cooperman Barnabas Medical
Center in Livingston and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
(RWJBarnabas is also awaiting regulatory approval on a memorandum of
understanding to bring Englewood Hospital into its system.)
Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center and
Valley Hospital all tied at No. 8. AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center was the only other
hospital that earned a ranking, coming in at No. 11.
HUMC again showed why it deserves the top spot. The hospital was nationally ranked
(meaning Top 50) in seven specialties.
- Orthopedics: No. 14
- Urology: No. 32
- Neurology & Neurosurgery: No. 34
- Pulmonology & Lung Surgery: No. 36
- Cancer: No. 38 (tie)
- Diabetes & Endocrinology: No. 43
- Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery: No. 45
Hackensack Meridian Health also has the top childrens and cancer hospitals in the
state.
HMH CEO Bob Garrett said the rankings reflect the work happening at the hospital level
every day.
“These rankings reflect our extraordinary team members across HMH who are
delivering exceptional care every day,” he said. “From being home to New Jersey’s top-ranked cancer program and #1 hospital, to earning national recognition across multiple specialties, these achievements demonstrate our unwavering commitment to clinical excellence, innovation and putting patients first.”
Dr. Lisa Tank, president and chief hospital executive at Hackensack University Medical
Center, credited the hospital’s staff directly for the ranking.
“We are privileged to serve the people of New Jersey, and this recognition is a
testament to the extraordinary dedication of our physicians, nurses, clinicians, and
every member of our multidisciplinary team,” Tank said. “Their unwavering commitment
to delivering patient-centered, high-quality, and safe care drives these outstanding
results.”
Atlantic Health Morristown was the only other hospital to have nationally ranked
specialties, earning Top 50 designations in three categories:
- Orthopedics: No. 13
- Urology: No. 25
- Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery: No. 41
Atlantic Health System CEO Saad Ehtisham said his system’s showing at second and
third reflects a similar level of consistency.

Cooper University Health Care Chairman George Norcross III said the hospital’s climb
to No. 4 — up from No. 7 a year ago — reflects the investments the health system has
made in its people and its campus.
“The increase in ranking in New Jersey this year is a powerful recognition of the
extraordinary work done by Cooper’s exceptional physicians, nurses, and team
members,” he said. “It reflects our continued investment in the people, programs and innovation that make Cooper one of the nation’s premier academic health systems.”
The U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 37th year,
evaluate more than 4,400 hospitals nationwide using objective measures including
patient outcomes, patient experience and nursing quality, among other indicators.
