The check was written before the ribbon was cut.
That’s the part worth noticing about the $10 million commitment that landed at the New Jersey Innovation Hub at the HELIX earlier this month.
The N.J. Economic Development Authority put up $5 million. RWJBarnabas Health matched it. The money will flow through Portal Innovations to the earliest-stage life sciences startups working inside HELIX, the New Brunswick district that’s quickly becoming one of the most important addresses in New Jersey health care — even though, in many ways, it’s still just getting started.
A state agency and a hospital system, writing checks to the same fund, for companies that don’t yet have products on the market. That’s not the kind of deal that makes headlines outside the industry. But it’s exactly the kind of deal New Jersey needs more of.

For decades, New Jersey has called itself the medicine chest of the world, and for decades, it’s mostly been true — a state with more pharmaceutical and biotech firms per square mile than anywhere else in the country, home to some of the largest health systems in the Northeast, sitting between two cities, New York and Philadelphia, that would happily take that title for themselves.
Holding onto it was never going to be automatic. It requires hospitals investing in research. It requires universities producing the science. It requires government willing to write a check before a company has proven it can stand on its own. And increasingly, it requires all three actually talking to each other, rather than working in separate rooms toward the same goal.
That’s what’s different about what’s happening at HELIX right now.
- RWJBarnabas Health isn’t just treating patients down the road — it’s funding the startups that might one day change how those patients are treated.
- The EDA isn’t just handing out tax incentives — it’s becoming a hands-on investor in early-stage science.
- Portal Innovations, the venture-development group actually managing the effort, arrived in New Brunswick and signed 16 founding companies before most of the state even knew the hub existed.
Companies working on engineered T-cell therapy for HPV. AI tools that catch medication errors before they happen. A device that checks the nutritional quality of frozen breastmilk. None of them are household names yet. Some of them may never be. But they’re here, in New Jersey, because a hospital system and a state agency decided the earliest, riskiest stage of innovation was worth funding together.
George Norcross made a similar bet this summer, in a different form — a $100 million gift to Cooper University Health Care, the largest single donation in the health system’s history, aimed at Camden’s continued growth. Different mechanism, same instinct: the state’s health care institutions investing not just in the patients in front of them today, but in the ones who’ll need them a decade from now.
