Optimum launches 19th Annual Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest

As communities across the Garden State kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month, telecommunications provider Optimum has announced the launch of its 19th annual Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest, inviting local middle and high school students to share their perspectives on Hispanic culture.

Open to students in grades 6 through 12 attending schools within Optimum’s service footprint, the long-running contest offers a platform for youth to explore and honor the rich histories, diverse cultures, and profound contributions of Hispanic Americans.

This year’s essay prompt challenges students to write 500 words or less identifying a Hispanic individual, work of art, historical contribution, community organization, or cultural value that has inspired them or shifted their worldview. Participants are asked to detail what they learned from this influence and how it has shaped their personal goals, perspectives, or connection to their local New Jersey communities.

“For nearly two decades, Optimum’s Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest has given students a platform to reflect on the people, traditions, and experiences that connect them to Hispanic culture,” Sean O’Connell, senior vice president and general manager at Optimum said. “As the program enters its 19th year, we’re proud to continue celebrating student voices while recognizing the rich histories, cultures, and contributions that make Hispanic heritage so meaningful in the communities we serve.”

The contest features attractive rewards for participating students and educators alike:

  • Grand Prizes: A total of four $3,000 scholarships will be awarded to top student entries.
  • Additional Honors: Honorable mention prizes will also be distributed.
  • Educator Appreciation: Optimum will recognize teachers who champion student participation by awarding special gifts to educators who sponsor the highest volume of essay submissions.
