How MEND is developing neighborhoods in South Jersey

Nonprofit, based in Moorestown, is providing high-quality, accessible, secure, safe and affordable housing in effort to create stronger communities

Location

Moorestown

Leader

Eileen Wirth, CEO

Origin

Moorestown Ecumenical Neighborhood Development was incorporated in 1969, driven by the belief of founder Boyce M. Adams that, “Everyone deserves a decent, safe and affordable place to call home.” MEND’s first project revitalized a struggling neighborhood, setting a precedent for affordable housing nearly six years before the Mount Laurel I decision.

Mission/vision

MEND’s mission is to provide high-quality, accessible, secure, safe and affordable housing to individuals and families in Southern New Jersey, thereby fostering sustainable and strong communities. With the vision that housing is accessible to all, MEND serves low- and moderate-income households (including individuals, families, senior citizens and people with disabilities).

Key programs

  • Maintains and expands the supply of affordable rental housing for low- and moderate-income households who cannot afford market-rate rents and need a decent, safe, affordable place to call home.
  • It’s commitment goes beyond the provision of affordable homes through initiatives like the Resident Emergency Fund, Children’s Holiday Fund and the Resident Happiness & Cheer Appeal, which provide direct support to residents during emergencies and holidays.

Biggest event/fundraiser

MEND with Music, coming April 30, 2026, at the Moorestown Community House.

Supporters/donors

MEND is deeply grateful for the generosity of its many supporters, including individuals, businesses, foundations, etc., whose compassion and commitment make its work possible.

One more thing

MEND’s commitment moves beyond housing to include community by blending history and local heritage with the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. A couple of examples include the transformation of a former firehouse and the Lenola Elementary School into affordable rental homes for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities.
