Cooper University Hospital in Camden has officially secured recertification as an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, reaffirming its position at the forefront of neurological care in the region.
This designation, marked by The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval®, recognizes Cooper’s capability to manage the most complex stroke cases, requiring 24/7 specialized care, advanced imaging and expert multidisciplinary interventions.
A critical component of Cooper’s success is its focus on minimizing the time between a patient’s arrival and treatment—a vital factor in preventing long-term disability or death.
In 2022, the hospital opened a specialized Acute Stroke and Neuro Interventional Suite directly within its Emergency Department. The South Jersey facility uses cutting-edge biplane angiography technology, allowing medical teams to perform high-precision imaging and minimally invasive procedures in a single location, effectively streamlining the path to recovery.
Since first achieving this elite certification in 2017, Cooper has consistently cleared rigorous on-site reviews and performance benchmarks. Dr. Tudor Jovin, chief and chairman of Neurology at Cooper University Health Care, noted that the recertification highlights the system’s dedication to innovation.
“Through the strength of our integrated team and our investment in advanced technology, we are ensuring that patients across our region have access to the most sophisticated stroke and neurovascular care available — close to home,” Jovin said.
As the only Level 1 Trauma Center in South Jersey, Cooper plays a pivotal role in the health of the community. With stroke remaining a leading cause of disability in the U.S. and affecting nearly 800,000 Americans annually, the presence of an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center provides a vital safety net for patients in the region.
