N.J. Film Commission designates 15 new ‘film ready’ communities

New Jersey’s push to become the “Hollywood of the East” reached a new milestone Wednesday as the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission (NJMPTVC) added 15 municipalities to its roster of Film Ready Communities.

With this latest cohort, the state now boasts 58 certified destinations equipped to handle the logistical and technical demands of major motion picture and television productions. The program, a key initiative of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), aims to standardize permitting and public safety protocols to make the Garden State an irresistible draw for global producers.

The 15 municipalities joined the program after completing a rigorous five-step certification process. The newest members represent a diverse array of New Jersey landscapes, from historic river towns to bustling suburban hubs:

  • Central Jersey: Edison, Hamilton, Highland Park, New Brunswick, Robbinsville
  • North Jersey: Fanwood, Garwood, Hanover, Newton, Randolph
  • Jersey Shore & South: Hightstown, Lambertville, Oceanport, Phillipsburg, Shrewsbury

“New Jersey’s variety of landscapes—from charming main streets to rugged mountains—are a major asset for the industry,” NJEDA CEO Evan Weiss said. “This newest cohort will be prepared for the industry’s continued growth, creating jobs for residents and supporting our small businesses.”

The Film Ready New Jersey Program acts as a “concierge service” for the entertainment industry. By achieving certification, these towns signal to production companies that they have:

  • Standardized Ordinances: Clear, predictable rules for filming permits.
  • Trained Liaisons: Local officials who understand the unique needs of a film crew (e.g., parking, power, and security).
  • Local Business Integration: A framework to ensure local caterers, hardware stores, and hotels benefit from production spending.

NJMPTVC Executive Director Jon Crowley noted that as production breaks records in the state, consistency is key. “The Film Ready Program establishes statewide consistency and provides expert guidance… strengthening the state’s leadership as more producers choose the Garden State.”
