Trenton Thunder sold to Diamond Baseball Holdings, signals new era for Mercer County landmark

In a move that reshapes the landscape of New Jersey’s professional sports industry, the Trenton Thunder announced Thursday that the club has been sold to Diamond Baseball Holdings (DBH). The acquisition marks a significant transition for the 32-year-old franchise, moving it from long-time local ownership into the portfolio of a national powerhouse in sports management.

The transaction, expected to close in the coming weeks pending league approval, ensures the Thunder will remain a fixture of the MLB Draft League. Crucially for local fans and the regional economy, the club’s existing leadership—including President Jeff Hurley and General Manager Jon Bodnar—will remain at the helm.

Since its founding in 1994, the Thunder has evolved from a minor league affiliate into a central pillar of the Mercer County business community. The outgoing ownership group, led by Joe Plumeri, Joe Finley and Joe Caruso, oversaw a transformation that included:

  • Four Eastern League Championships during its tenure as a New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers affiliate.
  • Market Leadership: The team consistently led the MLB Draft League in attendance in 2022 and 2023.
  • Infrastructure Investment: Recent multi-million-dollar upgrades to the Trenton Thunder Ballpark, including the high-end Victory Lounge, have modernized the facility for corporate partners and fans alike.

“Our vision was always about families and building the community,” Plumeri, Managing Partner of the Thunder, said. “We believe DBH is the right partner to build on that legacy and ensure the Thunder remain a vibrant part of the regional sports landscape.”

For Diamond Baseball Holdings, adding Trenton to its roster is a strategic play in a “terrific market with an incredibly loyal fan base,” according to DBH Executive Chairman Pat Battle and CEO Peter Freund.

For the Trenton business community, the acquisition brings several key advantages:

  1. Increased Resources: DBH provides a national “ecosystem” of professional management, innovation, and capital investment.
  2. Long-term Stability: The commitment from a national operator suggests a long-term future for the Delaware River-front destination.
  3. Heritage Preservation: As part of the agreement, the playing field will retain the name Samuel J. Plumeri Sr. Field in perpetuity, honoring the family that brought professional baseball back to the capital city.

Mercer County Executive Dan Benson voiced strong support for the deal, noting that the ballpark remains a “vibrant destination” that drives regional tourism and local spending.

While the ownership changes, the mission remains the same: leveraging the scenic ballpark as a hub for family entertainment and professional development for baseball’s rising stars. With the backing of DBH, the Thunder appears poised to strike a balance between its deep Jersey roots and its new national reach.
