To celebrate America turning a cool 250 (the big semiquincentennial!), the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music at Monmouth University is throwing a two-night concert that’s already being called the event of a lifetime.
Music America: The Songs that Shaped Us, and it’s hitting the stage on June 4 and 5 at the OceanFirst Bank Center and is being dubbed ultimate “opening act” for the grand unveiling of the brand-new Bruce Springsteen Center building on June 7.
Usually, when people say a lineup is “star-studded,” they mean a couple of big names. This time? They mean everybody. We’re talking about a “Who’s Who” of music legends spanning every genre that makes America move.
- The Hometown Heroes & Rock Royalty: Obviously, Bruce Springsteen is showing up, along with Jon Bon Jovi, Jackson Browne, Dion and Nils Lofgren.
- The Soul & Blues Heavyweights: Prepare for chills from Mavis Staples, Darlene Love, Keb’ Mo’ and Shemekia Copeland.
- The Trailblazers: We’ve got Public Enemy bringing the hip-hop history, Rosanne Cash and Kenny Chesney representing country, Gary Clark Jr. on the blues, and Trombone Shorty bringing that NOLA jazz fire.
- The Ultimate House Band: Little Steven himself—Stevie Van Zandt—and The Disciples of Soul will be the backbone for both nights.
Each artist isn’t just playing their hits; they’re performing the landmark songs that actually defined the American experience. Plus, there’s a bit of storytelling involved—each performance comes with narration to give you the “why” behind the music.
Robert Santelli, the Center’s executive director, says it best: it’s a journey through our history. It’s about the power of music to bring people together, especially when times feel a little divided.
The Center’s director, Eileen Chapman, wants this to be an “unforgettable experience” that honors where we’ve been while pumping up the next generation to keep the music going.
