Stockton University has officially named David Fuentes as the new Dean of the School of Education, bringing a veteran leader with a deep focus on equity and community impact to the head of the department.
The appointment, effective as of April 6, was announced by Stockton Provost Michael Palladino. Fuentes succeeds Interim Dean Kimberly Dickerson, who will transition back to her role as Assistant Dean.
Fuentes makes the move to South Jersey from William Paterson University in Wayne, where he served as the Associate Dean of the College of Education. With over 20 years of experience as a scholar and professor of Teacher Education, Fuentes has dedicated his career to refining how primary and secondary educators are prepared for the modern classroom.
“I’m energized to advance a vision of transformative education grounded in access, critical inquiry, intellectual rigor, and social justice,” Fuentes said. “Access to high-quality teacher preparation is an essential component of a thriving democracy. If you want to be a teacher, we have a pathway for you.”
In his new role, Fuentes plans to bridge the gap between the university and the surrounding Atlantic County community. His primary goals include:
- Strengthening Partnerships: Building deeper ties with local school districts and organizations.
- Student Well-being: Expanding academic and emotional support systems for students.
- Inclusive Excellence: Ensuring teacher preparation programs reflect the diverse learning environments found in New Jersey’s public schools.
Palladino noted that Fuentes’ history of supporting faculty development and his commitment to inclusive excellence made him the ideal candidate for the position. “He brings a strong commitment to the development of educators who are ready to lead and serve,” he added.
Fuentes is a recognized voice in educational technology and equity. He is the author of “Digital Learning in High-Needs Schools: A Critical Approach to Technology Access and Equity in PreK-12” and currently serves as Project Director for a U.S. Department of Education Augustus F. Hawkins Centers of Excellence grant.
His leadership has earned him national acclaim, including the 2024 Mildred García Founders’ Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education.
As he takes the helm at Stockton, Fuentes emphasized that the university’s culture of “caring beyond the classroom” was a major draw. Under his leadership, the School of Education is expected to double down on its mission to produce the next generation of teachers who are not only technically proficient but community focused.
