Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has emerged as the leader among all major Northeast airports for the most on-time flights so far in 2026. The data marks a significant operational turnaround for the tri-state hub, which faced severe scheduling and delay challenges roughly one year ago.
United Airlines, EWR’s largest commercial carrier, anchored the airport’s performance by delivering its best-ever on-time rate at Newark during April and May. The airline maintained the record schedule while transporting nearly 5.8 million passengers through the hub during that two-month window.
The operational momentum extended into the holiday weekend, with United flying a network-record three million passengers over the Memorial Day period while maintaining a near 70% on-time arrival rate. System-wide, the airline projects it will transport more than 53 million travelers over the course of the 2026 summer season.
The airport’s top ranking follows a highly disrupted spring season last year, during which a confluence of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) radar and radio outages, acute air traffic control staffing shortages, and active runway construction triggered widespread flight delays, diversions, and cancellations.
The operational reversal was driven by direct interventions from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy and the FAA. Federal authorities systematically upgraded technology at the airport, enhanced localized staffing levels, and placed strict caps on total flight volumes to ensure Newark’s active schedules directly align with the physical capacity of the airport.
United CEO Scott Kirby celebrated the hub’s performance metrics and directly credited local employees during a recent visit.
“Newark has operated better than it ever has and that’s a direct result of the actions taken by Secretary Duffy and the FAA as well as the professionalism, dedication and care of our nearly 15,000 local employees,” Kirby said. “Newark is the ‘crown jewel’ of our international network serving as a global gateway to dozens of international destinations.”
United’s Newark hub connects travelers to nearly 320 cities across North, South, and Central America, alongside the Caribbean. EWR serves as a premier transatlantic gateway, offering nonstop service to 42 destinations across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and India—representing the largest transatlantic portfolio of any carrier operating out of the New York City metropolitan area.
The hub maintains exclusive service to 15 global destinations that no other domestic carrier operates.
The carrier’s international expansion will continue later this year. Beginning Sept. 4, United will debut as the sole U.S. airline offering nonstop flights between Newark and Seoul, South Korea. In October, the airline will also introduce the region’s only direct service to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
