AAACN launches national initiative to advance ambulatory care nursing innovation and data

The American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) has officially launched the Center for Ambulatory Care Nursing Innovation and Excellence, a landmark national initiative aimed at elevating the visibility and clinical impact of nurses working in ambulatory settings.

As the U.S. health care landscape shifts toward community-based settings, ambulatory care has become the dominant environment for patient treatment. However, the nursing professionals at the heart of this care have historically lacked the standardized data infrastructure required to document their contributions to patient health. The new Center aims to bridge this gap, providing the tools and evidence needed to validate the essential role nurses play in modern health care.

Despite their influence on quality of care, ambulatory care nurses have struggled with a lack of visibility in health outcome metrics. The AAACN’s new Center aims to change this by prioritizing:

  • Taxonomy Development: Building and testing a specialized nursing taxonomy specific to the ambulatory care environment.
  • Outcome Measurement: Creating direct links between nursing interventions and measurable patient health outcomes.
  • National Benchmarking: Establishing rigorous, standardized benchmarks and professional standards.
  • AI Integration: Ensuring that the nursing profession is represented and influential in the development and application of artificial intelligence in health care.

“This launch marks a pivotal moment for our profession,” AAACN President Andrea Petrovanie-Green said. “Ambulatory care nurses are essential to the health of individuals and communities. AAACN’s Center will give our specialty the platform, tools, and evidence needed to measure ambulatory care nursing’s impact in health outcomes.”

To accelerate these goals, the AAACN has entered a strategic partnership with Oculi Data, a leader in health care analytics. This collaboration will focus on developing national ambulatory care measures and sophisticated benchmarking tools that will be accessible to healthcare facilities of all sizes.

The partnership leverages the expertise of Oculi Data founder Teresa (Terry) Anderson. Oculi Data operates a web-based benchmarking database designed to allow facilities to compare nurse-sensitive quality outcomes with peer units across the country.

“Oculi Data is a company built by a nurse, for nurses,” Anderson said. “We know that nurses and organizations demonstrate excellence in nursing care; now they have the data to prove it. This partnership will benefit both organizations and propel measurement forward across all ambulatory care settings.”

The AAACN, which advocates for the principle of “Shaping Care Where Life Happens,” views this initiative as a necessary evolution for the specialty. By creating a standardized, evidence-based approach to measurement, the Academy aims to empower nurse leaders and frontline clinicians to better advocate for their patients and their practice.
