Allentown High School athlete wins 2026 Strength Award Scholarship after remarkable recovery

Savannah Barry, a sophomore student-athlete at Allentown High School, has been named the 2026 winner of the Kearny Bank Strength Award scholarship. Presented in partnership with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), the $2,500 scholarship honors student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional resilience by overcoming serious injury or illness to return to competitive sports.

Barry’s path to the award was paved by an extraordinary story of survival and determination following a life-altering accident in March 2025. While snowmobiling in the remote woodlands of New York, Barry suffered a catastrophic injury when her vehicle flipped, crushing her L2 vertebrae.

By a stroke of immense fortune, she was discovered by vacationing first responders who stabilized her and coordinated emergency transport despite the area’s lack of cell service. Upon reaching a hospital in Utica, doctors discovered that the crushed vertebra was dangerously close to her spinal cord. She was quickly transferred to Albany Medical Center, where she underwent emergency surgery to stabilize her spine with two rods and six screws.

Despite the severity of her injury and a recovery process that required weeks in a back brace with limited mobility, Barry remained focused on the sport she loves. Even during the most difficult moments of her rehabilitation, her determination never wavered.

“Everything shifted overnight,” Barry said of the immediate aftermath of her injury. “What I’d been working so hard for suddenly felt out of reach.”

Though she was forced to miss her softball seasons in 2025, she remained a constant presence in the dugout, supporting her teammates. As her health improved, she began sports-specific rehabilitation. By the start of the 2025-2026 school year, she had returned to the court for basketball, and this past spring, she made her triumphant return to the varsity softball diamond.

Barry’s performance on the field has been as impressive as her recovery off of it. In her sophomore season, she played in 20 varsity games, boasting a .355 batting average and tallying 29 hits.

“Savannah never lost sight of who she is as a person and an athlete,” Allentown High School Director of Athletics Dennis Carey said. “Even at the very lowest points, she stayed focused on coming back. Savannah has refused to let struggles define her future; actually, I’d say they’re now the foundation that will carry her into whatever adventure she takes on next.”

The scholarship was presented to Barry by Michael Weinstein, vice president and sales market lead at Kearny Bank.

“Kearny Bank is proud to recognize Savannah for her incredible journey,” the organization noted. The bank, established in 1884, continues its long-standing tradition of supporting New Jersey communities through its collaboration with the NJSIAA to highlight the achievements of student-athletes who embody the spirit of perseverance.
