United Airlines has officially marked a major milestone in inflight connectivity, launching its first transatlantic widebody flight equipped with high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi.
United flight 14, a Boeing 777-200 which departed from Newark/New York to London Wednesday evening, serves as the inaugural transatlantic flight for the airline’s new service. This launch is the beginning of an aggressive expansion phase that will see nearly 60 of the airline’s widebody aircraft outfitted with the technology by the end of this year.
By leveraging Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, United aims to provide consistent, high-speed internet access across global routes that were previously difficult to reach, including polar regions, oceanic corridors, and remote international locations.
“United is changing what it means to stay connected on an overseas flight,” David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer said. “Starlink offers the same fast, reliable internet access and connectivity we’re all used to at home, delivered in the air at 35,000 feet.”
The airline is moving quickly to modernize the passenger experience. With over 400 aircraft already equipped with Starlink, United expects to have nearly 1,000 planes—including its entire widebody fleet—outfitted by next summer.
The impact on customer satisfaction has been notable; since launching the service last spring, United reports that Wi-Fi customer satisfaction scores on Starlink-equipped flights have nearly doubled. To date, the technology has supported over 18.6 million passengers across 311,000 flights.
The integration of Starlink is designed to support the modern traveler’s needs, offering capabilities that mirror at-home connectivity:
- Real-Time Gaming: Enabling live gameplay and platform synchronization.
- Professional Productivity: Seamlessly editing shared documents and handling large file transfers.
- Multi-Device Support: Reliable connection for phones, tablets, laptops, and seatback screens simultaneously.
- Seamless Planning: Real-time access for booking, shopping, and communication.
Starlink Wi-Fi remains free for all United MileagePlus members. Passengers can check their flight status at united.com/starlink to see if their specific aircraft is scheduled for the new service.
