The Hoboken Public Library is set to enter an exciting new chapter as it launches the next phase of its historic Main Library renovation. Beginning Aug. 13, the building at 500 Park Avenue will temporarily close its doors to accommodate the major construction project, with the second and third floors scheduled to reopen to the public on Oct. 5.
Years in the making, the initiative is a cornerstone of the Library’s Capital Master Plan—established in 2017—to invest in its facilities and secure its future. Funding for the project is provided by a grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust alongside the Library’s own capital investment stewardship.
Designed by Clarke Caton Hintz, an architecture and planning firm specializing in historic preservation, the project carefully balances modern accessibility with the building’s 130-year legacy. Highlights of the restoration include:
- Historic Details: Painstaking restoration of original pressed-metal ceilings, cornices, frieze tiles, flooring, millwork, and bookcases.
- Classic Aesthetics: Revitalization of original plaster walls featuring an authentic historic paint scheme.
- Modern Accessibility: Installation of a new vertical platform lift on the mezzanine level to connect the first floor and mezzanine.
“This renovation reflects years of planning by the Library Board of Trustees and the generous support of the New Jersey Historic Trust,” Library Director Jennie Pu said. “This project will deliver spaces worthy of a building and a community that has loved its library for over 130 years.”
Mayor Emily Jabbour emphasized the importance of maintaining community services throughout the construction period. “Even while work is underway, residents will continue to have access to the library’s critical services across the city,” Jabbour said. “When this phase is complete, Hoboken will have a more welcoming, more accessible library that ensures everyone can fully experience everything this remarkable institution has to offer.”
While the Main Library building is closed, patrons can continue utilizing several alternative locations and services:
- Grand Street Branch: Fully open at 124 Grand Street on the 2nd Floor of the Multi-Service Center, hosting ongoing children’s and teen programs.
- The Learning Center: Located at 401 Harrison Street, providing adult computer access during the closure.
- Library Lockers: Self-service pickup lockers remain fully operational outside the Main Library, the Grand Street Branch, and the Hoboken Historical Museum.
- Outdoor & Partner Programs: Storytimes will shift outdoors to local parks weather permitting, while additional youth programs will run at various partner locations throughout the city.
