New Jersey secures $847K federal grant to help small businesses expand globally

Local small and mid-sized businesses looking to break into international markets are getting a major boost. The New Jersey Department of State’s Business Action Center (NJBAC) last month announced a federal funding award of $847,000 for the State Trade Expansion Program (NJSTEP).

Backed in part by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the financial awards will be distributed to eligible companies on a first-come, first-served competitive basis to help offset the costs of exporting goods and services overseas.

State officials emphasize that expanding beyond U.S. borders is no longer reserved exclusively for major corporations.

  • Strategic advantage: With New Jersey serving as a premier logistics and distribution hub, local businesses possess a natural gateway to global commerce.
  • Eligible uses: Grant funds can be used to support critical export activities, such as international trade shows and missions, overseas marketing, website localization and search engine optimization (SEO), and export training.
  • Proven impact: This latest allocation marks 13 consecutive years of federal funding for the program. Previous iterations have yielded impressive economic returns: the STEP 11 Grant (2023–2025) generated over $49 million in actual sales and helped create or retain nearly 2,000 jobs.

“International retail is an important part of the business plan or goal for many small businesses. As a logistics and distribution hub, New Jersey offers businesses a distinct advantage in accessing global markets,” New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell said.

Melanie Willoughby, executive Director of the NJBAC, echoed this sentiment, encouraging regional entrepreneurs to look outward for growth. “Selling into global markets is not only for large or established firms. We are encouraging New Jersey companies to apply for a NJSTEP grant to support their exporting activities and grow New Jersey jobs,” she said.

How to apply

Administered by the NJBAC’s Office of Export Promotion, the program is open to New Jersey-registered, tax-compliant small businesses that have been in operation for at least one year and produce goods or services with at least 51% U.S. content.

The application portal is officially open. Business owners interested in learning more or checking their eligibility can visit the NJBAC website or call 1-800-JERSEY-7.
