The rapid advancements in AI tools and immersive, computer-generated environments are poised to radically disrupt traditional modes of artistic creation and consumption. To explore this transformation, Stevens Institute of Technology will host its inaugural “Synthetic Narratives” conference on Oct. 24 and 25, convening leading artists, technologists, and thinkers to address the cultural, philosophical, and creative potential of this rapidly evolving field.
The two-day symposium will delve into what this evolution means for both audiences and artists, featuring panel discussions, lectures, film screenings, and interactive exhibits. Attendees will get a first-hand look at how innovative creators are adopting these new technologies.
Keynote by David Chalmers
The conference highlight will be a keynote address by renowned philosopher David Chalmers, best known for formulating the “hard problem of consciousness.” Chalmers will explore the implications of the Apple TV show “Severance” for understanding large language models like ChatGPT.
Organized by Stevens faculty members Christopher Manzione and Jonah King, the event aims to tackle urgent questions surrounding creativity and authorship in a world where new storytelling mediums are constantly emerging.
“This is a unique moment where entirely new storytelling mediums are emerging,” Manzione, an associate professor at Stevens, said. “They touch every part of the creative process and raise urgent ethical and cultural questions about creativity and authorship.”
Jonah King, also an associate professor and artist at Stevens, added: “Creators aren’t simply adopting new AI tools, they’re inventing new ways of experiencing art and film. This moment forces us to confront a world where pillars of meaning are constantly being rewritten.”
Public and ticketed programming
The conference begins on Oct. 24, with free public programming that includes a creativity workshop, an art exhibition opening, and an AI short film screening.
Oct. 25, will feature four expert panels followed by Chalmers’ keynote presentation. Tickets for the programming are available for purchase here. The organizers welcome artists, experts, and the general public to join.
