Origin

Mercer Street Friends was founded in 1958 by members of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers. The founding volunteers responded by renovating a 100-year-old meeting house located on Mercer Street in the Mill Hill section of Trenton, turning the facility into a community center for neighbors in need.

Mission/vision

“Nourishing minds and bodies; empowering families and communities.”

Mercer Street Friends is a nonprofit organization that provides food for those who are food insecure, support for families and educational opportunities that lead to better tomorrows. We work in collaboration with social and human service organizations, several local school districts and medical health resources to ensure that families of all ages and stages can access the services they need to live a more fulfilling life.

Key programs

  • Its focus is food, family and education.
  • As the Feeding America Food Bank for Mercer County, Mercer Street Friends provides meals and essential services through 100-plus community partners.
  • Beyond hunger relief, it supports families with education, parenting and social programs. Its Community Schools and Preschool in Trenton help children and families thrive through comprehensive educational opportunities, meeting the social, emotional, physical and mental health and academic needs of students.

Biggest event/fundraiser

Each June, Mercer Street Friends hosts the Annual Leadership Awards Celebration in its food bank warehouse. The event recognizes corporations, foundations and individuals who have dedicated their personal and professional lives to the service of others.

Supporters/donors

Mercer Street Friends has been the beneficiary of extraordinary philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and private foundations, as well as associations, houses of worship and schools
