Dr. Sheldon Lin, a prominent orthopaedic surgeon based in Newark, has been appointed president of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS). The AOFAS is the leading global organization for foot, ankle, and lower extremity care, and Lin’s new role highlights the significant contributions he has made from his base in New Jersey.
Lin’s New Jersey roots run deep within his professional career. He is an associate professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and a foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon at the Rutgers North Jersey Orthopaedic Institute. He also serves as an attending physician at both University Hospital in Newark and Overlook Medical Center in Summit.
In his new role as president of the 2,500-member society, Lin plans to focus on attracting and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.
“We must continue to develop programs that engage orthopaedic residents and medical students early in their careers,” he stated, emphasizing the need for research support, mentorship, and grant-writing guidance to encourage more trainees to pursue the specialty.
Lin also intends to strengthen international partnerships with organizations like the European Foot & Ankle Society (EFAS) to foster a global exchange of knowledge. His dedication to advancing the profession and improving patient care has been a hallmark of his career for nearly two decades.

Having served in various leadership roles, including president-elect and president of the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation, Lin is well-positioned to guide the society forward.
