Mercer County Community College expands access with new liberal arts program at James Kerney Campus

Mercer County Community College (MCCC) announced the launch of a new Liberal Arts degree program at its James Kerney Campus in downtown Trenton. Starting this fall, the program will provide students in the heart of the city with a direct pathway to an Associate of Arts degree, emphasizing the college’s commitment to expanding educational accessibility.

The launch is supported by a prestigious three-year, $150,000 grant from Achieving the Dream’s “Transforming Community College Through the Humanities” initiative, funded by the Mellon Foundation. MCCC was one of only five colleges across the nation selected for this competitive award.

The funding will provide significant resources for the campus, including:

  • Faculty and Curriculum Development: Enhancing the depth and quality of humanities education.
  • Paid Internships: Removing financial barriers for students by offering high-quality, experiential learning opportunities that balance work and study.

College leadership noted that the program is specifically designed to meet the needs of the diverse, first-generation, and adult learners who make up the James Kerney Campus community.

“The humanities play a critical role in fostering critical thinking, civic responsibility, cultural awareness and workforce-related skills,” said Dr. Deborah E. Preston, President of MCCC. “Now, students can pursue an associate degree at either MCCC location.”

Dr. Cruz-Cullari, Dean of the MCCC Liberal Arts Division, added that the curriculum is tailored to prepare students for a changing workforce. “Students will develop a strong knowledge base, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will lead to sustainable and meaningful employment,” said Dr. Cruz-Cullari.

The James Kerney Campus, which has provided educational opportunities in Trenton since its current location was established in 1998, remains one of the county’s most accessible sites for students using public transportation.

Prospective students can apply for the fall semester now. To assist with the enrollment process, MCCC will host two Open House events at the James Kerney Campus:

  • Thursday, July 16: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 18: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Interested students are encouraged to complete an online inquiry form at mccc.edu/la-jkc to learn more about the curriculum and potential scholarship opportunities.
