GAF expands DoD SkillBridge partnership with hands-on manufacturing training program for transitioning service members

GAF, a Standard Industries company and North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, has announced the expansion of its partnership with the Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge program. The initiative introduces a no-cost, six-month hands-on manufacturing training opportunity designed specifically to help transitioning service members build civilian careers.

The program addresses a critical and growing challenge across the U.S. manufacturing sector. According to estimates by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, the industry could face up to 3.8 million unfilled positions by 2033, with high-demand roles like industrial maintenance technicians requiring specialized, hands-on expertise.

“Service members bring technical expertise, disciplined problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork that translate naturally to modern manufacturing,” John Barkhouse, CEO and president at GAF. “This program gives them the opportunity to apply those strengths in a working GAF facility, gain experience with advanced manufacturing, and prepare for their next career.”

Program structure and locations

Through the six-month SkillBridge opportunity, participants train directly alongside GAF manufacturing teams. Trainees gain practical experience with company equipment, maintenance processes, and industry-leading standards for safety and quality. Upon completion, participants are considered for open roles across GAF’s extensive manufacturing network.

The training program is currently active at five GAF facilities across the country:

  • Myerstown, Pennsylvania
  • Michigan City, Indiana
  • Mount Vernon, Indiana
  • Newton, Kansas
  • Ennis, Texas

Building on a strong tradition of veteran support

This new manufacturing track builds upon GAF’s existing engagement with the SkillBridge program, which last year accredited the GAF Roofing Academy. Since launching in 2020, the Academy has provided tuition-free classroom and hands-on training in residential and commercial roofing to hundreds of service-affiliated participants, resulting in high job-placement rates.

GAF collaborates with numerous organizations to facilitate career pathways for veterans, including the Army Career Skills Program, NextOp, Work for Warriors, Hiring Our Heroes, and Team Rubicon. Beyond career training, the company actively supports the military community through initiatives like Roofs for Troops (offering rebates to active-duty personnel, veterans, and military retirees) and the Community Contractor Program, which partners with nonprofits to donate roof repairs and replacements for military families and veterans.
