DeCotiis, FitzPatrick, Cole & Giblin will announce today a major leadership restructuring in which Joseph DeCotiis will become the sole managing partner and his brother, Michael DeCotiis, will depart to launch his own firm with seven other attorneys, BINJE has learned.
The brothers have served as co-managing partners of the Paramus-based firm, which was founded 40 years ago by their father, M. Robert DeCotiis.
The firm, known for its representation of major government entities and private-sector clients and one of the state’s most influential, said the realignment will be completed by Jan. 31.
According to the firm, Joe and Michael DeCotiis have been discussing their long-term visions and how best to align the firm’s structure with the evolving needs of its clients. After “thoughtful consideration,” the firm said, both concluded that this moment presents a unique opportunity to reimagine the firm’s future.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we have accomplished in our 40-year history,” Joe DeCotiis said. “Michael and I both believe this move makes sense for our common goals of providing exceptional services to our clients. We are committed to continued collaboration and working together as we have done for many decades.”
Other aspects of the reorganization include:
- Founder M. Robert DeCotiis will continue to serve as chairman emeritus.
- Joe DeCotiis will reconstitute the executive leadership council, composed of senior partners across the firm. The council — whose membership is being finalized — will focus on strategic planning for the firm’s expansion.
- The firm will continue to operate as a full-service law practice with more than 50 attorneys.
- A transition plan is in place to ensure continuity for clients and partners as the firm enters its next chapter.
DeCotiis has long maintained strong relationships across state and local government, providing counsel in public entity representation, education and higher education, business and corporate law, real estate and redevelopment, litigation, labor and employment, government and regulatory affairs, tax, environmental law, health care law, bankruptcy and creditors’ rights, public finance and related disciplines.
Joe DeCotiis said the firm is focused on bolstering its roster of attorneys and practice areas while exploring new services. Additional information will be released in the near future, he said.
