Centenary Alum Michael Iris named VP for Advancement and Communications

Centenary University has turned to one of its own to lead its future growth. President John Schol announced Tuesday the appointment of Michael Iris as the new vice president for Advancement and Communications, effective Feb. 16.

Iris, a 2007 Centenary graduate and resident of Flanders, returns to his alma mater following a distinguished career in higher education administration. He will report directly to President Schol, overseeing the university’s fundraising, alumni relations, and strategic messaging.

The appointment is seen as a major win for the Hackettstown-based institution. Iris brings 14 years of leadership experience from Berkeley College, where he specialized in development and communications. His background is a unique blend of administrative strategy and creative expertise, having also served as an adjunct instructor in marketing, social media and graphic design.

“Centenary University is fortunate to attract Dr. Michael Iris, whose experience and accomplishments will further student success, university vitality, and world engagement,” Schol said. “His passion for student success and ability to connect with people make him an asset to our mission.”

Iris takes the helm at a time when Centenary is increasingly positioning itself as a global innovator—most notably through its world-first Ph.D. and Master’s programs in Happiness Studies.

His immediate roadmap for the university focuses on three core pillars:

  • Alumni Ambassadorship: Re-engaging the university’s graduate network to bolster philanthropic support.

  • Corporate Partnerships: Expanding relationships with regional business leaders to create “experiential opportunities” (internships and co-ops) for current students.

  • Brand Elevation: Leveraging his background in marketing to increase Centenary’s visibility both locally and globally.

“Alumni are among Centenary’s greatest ambassadors,” Iris said. “My longstanding relationship with Centenary provides me with strong institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of the university’s culture. I understand the student experience firsthand.”

Iris is no stranger to the New Jersey business and academic spotlight. His recent accolades include the Centenary University Distinguished Alumni Award (2022) where he was honored for his professional achievements and service.

His academic credentials further reflect his multi-disciplinary approach, holding a B.S. from Centenary, an M.S. from Kean University, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Saint Elizabeth University.
