The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) officially opened applications today for Phase 2 of the Green Workforce Training Grant Challenge. This $4 million competitive program is designed to build a robust pipeline of local talent for the state’s rapidly expanding green economy, with a strategic focus on providing career pathways for residents in overburdened communities.
The initiative aims to bridge the skills gap in high-growth sectors such as offshore wind, solar energy, building electrification, and grid modernization. By funding comprehensive training programs, the NJEDA seeks to ensure that New Jersey’s transition to clean energy also serves as an engine for economic equity.
The Grant Challenge offers substantial financial backing for organizations capable of delivering high-impact workforce development.

Grant amounts: Individual awards will range from $500,000 to $800,000.

Eligible costs: Funds are flexible and can be used for program design, planning, capital investments aand direct implementation costs.

Who can apply: The challenge is open to entities that provide skill development, job placement, and related workforce services—including community colleges, nonprofits, labor unions and private training providers.
The program requires applicants to submit detailed proposals outlining how they will strengthen and diversify the state’s workforce. Successful programs will not only teach technical skills but will also provide the wraparound supports necessary to help workers from diverse backgrounds transition into long-term careers.
“This challenge is about more than just filling jobs; it’s about creating a sustainable and inclusive economic ecosystem,” the NJEDA noted. “We are looking for innovative models that can be scaled to meet the immense demand for green-collar labor in the Garden State.”
