NJIT and Verizon join forces to launch no-cost AI and cybersecurity training

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) announced a major expansion of its workforce development partnership with Verizon, offering a free training program designed to equip New Jersey residents with the most in-demand skills in the modern economy.

Expected to launch in early April 2026, the program focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, and Information Technology (IT). Supported by a grant from Verizon, the initiative is specifically designed to bridge the digital skills gap and provide a pathway to high-paying tech careers for eligible residents across the Garden State.

A standout feature of this new phase is the Cybersecurity Community of Practice. Rather than a traditional classroom setting, this model creates a collaborative ecosystem where participants work alongside NJIT graduate students and industry experts.

This peer-to-peer mentorship ensures that students aren’t just learning theory—they are building a professional network from day one. “As the digital landscape evolves, Verizon is reshaping its commitments to help individuals build their skillset in the workforce’s most sought-after digital areas,” Donna Epps, Verizon’s chief responsible business officer said.

The curriculum is designed to be immediately applicable to the workforce, combining foundational IT knowledge with cutting-edge AI training.

  • CompTIA Tech+ and A+ Prep: Prepares students for essential certifications required for IT and telecommunications roles.
  • NJIT AI Literacy Microcredential: A specialized program ensuring participants understand both the ethical and practical applications of AI.
  • Flexible Access: Most training is conducted online, with varied schedules to accommodate working professionals. To ensure equity, laptops and internet access are available for qualifying participants.

The partnership leverages NJIT’s status as a top-ranked institution for value and alumni salaries. NJIT President Teik Lim noted that the collaboration goes beyond “traditional technical training” by matching the rapidly evolving needs of New Jersey employers.

“By combining CompTIA A+ certification with our new AI Literacy microcredential and a robust Community of Practice, we are providing opportunities that match the technological needs of employers,” Lim said.

How to apply

Applications are currently open for the April launch. Residents interested in the program can review eligibility requirements and apply through the NJIT Learning and Development Initiative (LDI).
