Hackensack Meridian Health experts weigh in on new Vitamin D study

As millions of Americans continue to grapple with the lingering effects of the coronavirus, a major clinical trial suggests that a common nutritional supplement could be a key tool in the fight against Long COVID.

According to the Vitamin D for COVID-19 (VIVID) Trial—one of the largest and most rigorous randomized studies to date—high-dose Vitamin D3 shows significant promise in preventing the debilitating fatigue and “brain fog” often associated with the virus’s aftermath.

The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition by researchers from Mass General Brigham, involved 1,747 adults. While the supplement did not appear to lessen the severity of an acute (initial) COVID-19 infection, it revealed a “noteworthy reduction” in long-term complications.

Among participants who strictly followed a daily regimen of 3,200 IU of Vitamin D3:

  • Only 21% reported persistent symptoms eight weeks post-infection.
  • This compared to 25% in the placebo group.

At Hackensack Meridian Health, home to New Jersey’s first COVID Recovery Center, clinicians are viewing the data as a vital step forward in patient care.

“The findings are a hopeful development for everyone impacted by Long COVID,” Karla Oliveri, advanced Practice Nurse with Hackensack Meridian Health’s COVID Recovery Center. “We’ve treated hundreds of patients since 2020 who are debilitated by the very symptoms this research addresses, like persistent fatigue and brain fog.”

Oliveri noted that while the research is promising, more investigation is needed before high-dose Vitamin D becomes a universal clinical recommendation. However, the study validates the “urgent need” for preventative tools.

The study reinforces what scientists have long known: Vitamin D is a powerhouse for the immune system. It helps the body produce cathelicidin, a natural germ-fighting substance that attacks viruses and bacteria in the respiratory system.

Beyond COVID-19, adequate Vitamin D levels provide critical support for:

  • Immune Modulation: Controlling infections and reducing systemic inflammation.
  • Bone & Muscle Health: Essential for calcium absorption and reducing fall risks in older adults.
  • Mental Health: Regulating mood and potentially improving symptoms of depression.
  • Heart Health: Aiding in arterial flexibility to help control high blood pressure.

The stakes for this research are high. According to the CDC, roughly 7% of U.S. adults—approximately 17 million people—reported having Long COVID as of early 2024.

“In our work, we see daily how this condition disrupts lives, careers, and families,” Oliveri added. “This new study is so important because it explores a potential tool for prevention, which is the ultimate goal.”

Experts from Hackensack Meridian Health’s Long COVID program remain available to provide further commentary on how these findings may eventually be integrated into the personalized, multidisciplinary care plans—including physical and cognitive therapies—offered to New Jersey residents.
