Rutgers University has unveiled a star-studded lineup of speakers for its 260th anniversary commencement season, featuring an Emmy-winning Marvel screenwriter, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, and a renowned global scholar.
The Rutgers Board of Governors officially approved the keynote speakers and honorary degree recipients today, setting the stage for a week of celebrations across Piscataway, Newark, and Camden this May.
On Sunday, May 17, Rutgers alumnus Christopher Markus will return to his alma mater to address graduates at SHI Stadium. Markus, a screenwriter who co-wrote six films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—including Avengers: Endgame—will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree.
Joining him on the field will be Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who is slated to receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during the morning ceremony.
The celebration moves to the Prudential Center on Thursday, May 21 where Jonathan Capehart will deliver the keynote address to Rutgers-Newark graduates. Capehart, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and co-anchor of MS NOW’s The Weekend, will be awarded an honorary degree of humane letters for his contributions to American media and public discourse.
In South Jersey, Rutgers University-Camden will hold its ceremony on Tuesday, May 19 at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion. Chancellor Antonio Tillis will serve as the keynote speaker. An internationally recognized scholar, Tillis is being honored for his extensive academic work and his leadership within the Camden community.
The 2026 commencement season marks a historic milestone for the state’s flagship university, celebrating 260 years since its founding.
“Commencement Week highlights the incredible talent on all our campuses and the impact Rutgers continues to make across New Jersey and around the world,” Rutgers President William Tate said.
