NJII secures CMMC Level 2 Certification to strengthen national defense and cybersecurity

The New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), an NJIT corporation focused on accelerating technology and innovation for government and industry, announced that it has successfully achieved Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2.

This major milestone marks a critical step in NJII’s ongoing mission to protect Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and uphold the strict cybersecurity standards demanded by the U.S. Department of War (DoW) and the Defense Industrial Base (DIB).

Earning CMMC Level 2 certification requires meeting 110 security requirements aligned with NIST Special Publication 800-171. The comprehensive assessment evaluated NJII’s cybersecurity program across multiple crucial domains, including:

  • Access management
  • Incident and risk management
  • System security and asset protection
  • Employee security awareness
  • Continuous monitoring

“Achieving CMMC Level 2 certification reflects NJII’s unwavering commitment to cybersecurity excellence and our mission to support defense, government, and industry partners with secure and trusted solutions,” Jennifer D’Angelo, Interim President at NJII said. “This accomplishment demonstrates the dedication of our team and reinforces our ability to protect sensitive information while delivering innovative technologies and services that advance national security objectives.”

As cyber threats grow increasingly sophisticated, leadership emphasizes that robust digital security is essential for operational resilience and protecting the integrity of the nation’s defense supply chain.

Thomas Murphy, Vice President of Defense at NJII, noted how the achievement ties into broader national strategies:

“Advanced manufacturing can only accelerate with strong digital security; NJII’s CMMC Level 2 supports the National Defense Strategy’s Line of Effort 4: Supercharging the Defense Industrial Base for secure, scalable defense production.”

Michael Grinaway, Senior Director of IT at NJII, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Cybersecurity is fundamental to innovation in today’s defense and technology landscape. This certification demonstrates NJII’s ability to meet stringent federal cybersecurity requirements while continuing to provide valuable support to our government and industry partners.”

With this certification secured, NJII is well-positioned to expand its support for organizations navigating complex cybersecurity compliance mandates and secure digital transformation initiatives. Through its expertise spanning advanced manufacturing, defense innovation, healthcare, and artificial intelligence, NJII continues to serve as a trusted partner in high-stakes, mission-critical environments.
