Inspira Health snags state and national honors for ‘superbug’ defense and antibiotic excellence

In a major victory for regional patient safety, South Jersey-based Inspira Health has swept multiple state and national awards recognizing its masterful management of antibiotic prescriptions across both its massive medical campuses and neighborhood urgent care clinics.

The dual recognitions from the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and national ambulatory boards celebrate Inspira’s strict compliance with federal guidelines designed to stop the rising, global threat of drug-resistant “superbugs.”

At the state level, the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) named Inspira Medical Centers in Elmer, Vineland, and Mullica Hill to its prestigious Antimicrobial Stewardship Honor Roll within the acute care category.

Furthermore, Inspira Medical Group distinguished itself in the community by becoming one of only two outpatient facilities in the entire state to secure a spot on the honor roll.

Simultaneously, Inspira took home national honors for its front-line urgent care infrastructure. The Commission on Ambulatory and Urgent Care Quality (CAUCQ), alongside the College of Urgent Care Medicine (CUCM), awarded a formal Antibiotic Stewardship Commendation to all eight of Inspira’s regional urgent care networks:

  • Glassboro
  • East Vineland
  • Laurel Springs
  • Mantua
  • Tomlin Station
  • Vineland
  • Washington Township
  • Woolwich

To secure both the state and national titles, Inspira had to demonstrate meticulous, data-driven compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Core Elements of Antimicrobial Stewardship.

Antibiotic stewardship centers on ensuring patients receive the correct dose of the correct medication only when medically necessary. Inadvertent over-reliance or improper prescribing of these drugs can cause common bacteria to mutate, creating highly lethal, drug-resistant superbugs that render standard modern medical treatments useless.

“Achieving these recognitions across our hospitals and urgent care sites is a testament to our teams’ collective efforts to safeguard antimicrobial effectiveness in patient care,” said Lydia Stockman, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Inspira Health. “Inspira Health is committed to ongoing education and evidence-based practices that combat antimicrobial resistance and support the best possible outcomes for patients.”

Edward Dix, Pharm.D., System Director of Pharmacy at Inspira, reiterated that clinical vigilance must go hand-in-hand with public awareness.

“Antibiotics are among the most powerful tools and critical resources in modern health care, but their misuse can put patients at risk,” Dix stated. “We are committed not only to ensuring safe use in our facilities but also to educating patients and supporting broader efforts to combat resistance and protect these life-saving medications for future generations.”
