As summer heat sets in, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is encouraging customers to combat inflation and rising utility costs by utilizing a suite of energy efficiency programs designed to reduce monthly bills.
“Small steps can add up to a big difference on your electric bill over time,” Tony Brown, director of Energy Efficiency Programs at JCP&L and its parent company, FirstEnergy, said. “Our programs are designed to give customers practical tools to manage energy use and save money.”
For residents unsure of where to begin, JCP&L offers a no-cost Whole Home Energy Assessment. During these visits, an energy advisor inspects the home and provides a customized report with actionable recommendations. Advisors may also install immediate energy-saving items, such as LED light bulbs, smart power strips, and water heater pipe wrapping, at no extra charge.
For homeowners looking to undertake more significant improvements, such as air sealing or adding insulation, the Whole Home Energy Solutions program offers rebates of up to $7,500 and access to 0% financing options.
JCP&L’s Energy Saving Marketplace provides instant discounts on high-efficiency equipment. Notably, select smart thermostats—including Google Nest, Honeywell, and Sensi models—are available for as little as $1.00.
Beyond the marketplace, the utility is offering substantial rebates for appliance and system upgrades:
- HVAC Systems: Up to $750 for ductless systems and up to $200 for central air conditioners.
- Appliances: Up to $100 for ENERGY STAR-rated refrigerators and up to $40 for dehumidifiers.
- Appliance Recycling: JCP&L will pay customers up to $100 for recycling old, working refrigerators or freezers, and $50 for qualifying dehumidifiers or room air conditioners.
Because air conditioning remains the largest electricity draw in most homes during the summer, JCP&L recommends these simple, daily practices to reduce the load on HVAC systems:
- Manage Sunlight: Close curtains during the day to block radiant heat from entering the home.
- Maintain Equipment: Replace air conditioner filters at least every three months, or more frequently during peak summer use.
- Reduce Internal Heat: Avoid using heat-producing appliances, such as ovens or dryers, during the hottest hours of the day.
