Montclair State University expands online reach with five new academic programs

Montclair State University announced the launch of five new online academic programs, a strategic expansion designed to meet the growing demand for flexible, high-quality education among working professionals and degree-completion students.

The new offerings span a variety of high-demand fields, including criminal justice, technology, education, health care management, and communications.

The university’s latest additions bring its portfolio of fully online degree and certificate programs to 44—a 57% increase over the last three years. According to Marc Austin, vice provost and managing director of Montclair Unbound, this growth is a deliberate response to both student needs and workforce trends.

“We are building an online portfolio with purpose,” Austin said. “These online programs reflect where students want access and flexibility, where employers and communities need talent and where Montclair has the academic depth to offer something meaningful and distinctive.”

The expanded lineup includes:

  • MA in Criminal Justice Leadership and Innovation: A 30-credit program focusing on ethical leadership, evidence-based practice, and data-informed solutions for professionals in justice, government, and nonprofit sectors.
  • MS in Computer Science: A 30-credit degree covering software engineering, cybersecurity, machine learning, and the responsible use of Generative AI, with pathways available for students from nontraditional backgrounds.
  • Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Graduate Certificate: A specialized program for educators and school-based professionals focusing on tiered academic and behavioral support systems.
  • MBA Concentration in Healthcare Management: Designed for professionals in hospitals, insurance, and pharmaceuticals, this program offers practical training in healthcare operations, policy, and patient experience. It is also available as a standalone graduate certificate.
  • BA in Communication and Media Studies (Degree Completion): An online option for students with prior college credit, focusing on media analysis, communication strategy, and digital storytelling to prepare them for careers in public relations, corporate communications, and media.

By increasing its online footprint, Montclair aims to broaden the reach of its academic experience to students who require flexible schedules to balance their education with professional or personal responsibilities.

“Online education allows us to remove barriers to opportunity and extend the reach of a Montclair experience,” Austin said. “It reflects our commitment to learning without limits, supporting students at every stage of their academic and professional journey.”
