William Paterson University launches cutting-edge virtual reality training for criminal justice students

William Paterson University is setting a new standard for experiential learning by becoming one of the first institutions in the United States to integrate immersive virtual reality (VR) training into its criminal justice and social work curricula. Starting in the Fall 2026 semester, students will utilize the WrapReality™ platform to practice critical skills in a controlled, high-stakes digital environment.

Bridging theory and applied practice

The new technology is designed to enhance the existing academic rigor of the university’s Criminology and Criminal Justice, Sociology, and Social Work programs. By moving beyond traditional classroom lectures, students can now engage in realistic, scenario-based training that prepares them for the complexities of careers in law enforcement, corrections, social work, and law.

“The Criminal Justice, Criminology, and Social Work programs at William Paterson have strong academic components,” Professor Colleen Eren, director of the Criminology and Criminal Justice program said. “We teach students social science theory and how to understand and apply empirical research. But we also want to give students the kind of applied knowledge that will set them apart in their chosen professions and keep them excited about learning.”

Immersive, real-world simulations

The WrapReality system offers dozens of guided simulations, allowing professors to challenge students with evolving fact patterns and complex decision-making scenarios. Students will be able to practice:

  • De-escalation and Crisis Management: Handling aggressive confrontations and domestic violence situations.
  • Ethical Decision-Making: Confronting unethical practices in policing and navigating high-pressure public safety dilemmas.
  • Constitutional Traffic Stops: Executing professional procedures in a realistic setting.
  • Behavioral Support: Assisting individuals with substance abuse disorders and interacting with incarcerated people in diverse environments.

Empowering the next generation of professionals

This acquisition highlights William Paterson University’s commitment to innovative technology and student success. By providing a safe space to review, repeat, and reinforce decision-making strategies, the university aims to better equip its graduates for the realities of their future roles.

Unlike traditional methods, this VR integration allows students to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and field application, ensuring they are prepared to serve their communities with effective communication, situational awareness, and sound judgment.
